Inbound Tourism Surges
The number of foreign visitors to Poland topped 72 million in 2013, marking a 9-percent increase from the previous year, which itself saw a record being set. Last year the surge in tourism was due to the Euro 2012 European soccer championships hosted jointly by Poland and Ukraine. The latest sharp increase is largely the result of Poland’s improved image, according to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism. Last year, the majority of foreign visitors came from Germany, 28.9 million, and the Czech Republic, 13.4 million. Visitors from Ukraine and Slovakia numbered 7.3 million and 6.7 million respectively. Belarus followed with 4 million and Russia with 3.6 million.
Revenues generated by visitors to Poland are estimated to have risen 11.5 percent to almost zl.40 billion (9.5 billion euros).
